“Certified Copy” is a 2010 film directed by Abbas Kiarostami and starring Juliette Binoche and William Shimell. The film explores themes of art, authenticity, and relationships in a unique and thought-provoking way.
The film takes place in Tuscany, Italy, where a French author, James (Shimell), is giving a talk about his new book. After the talk, he meets a local art dealer, Elle (Binoche), and they spend the day together visiting museums and talking about art. As they spend more time together, their conversation becomes increasingly complex and their relationship starts to blur the line between reality and fiction.
The film is shot in a very naturalistic style, with long takes and minimal cuts. This gives the film a sense of realism and immediacy that draws the viewer in and makes them feel like they are a part of the conversation. The performances by Binoche and Shimell are excellent, and they have a great chemistry together that makes their relationship feel very real and believable.
One of the most interesting aspects of the film is the way it plays with the idea of authenticity. James argues that a copy can be just as valuable as an original, as long as it is certified as such. This idea is reflected in the film itself, as the relationship between James and Elle becomes increasingly ambiguous and it becomes unclear what is real and what is a performance.
Overall, “Certified Copy” is a fascinating and thought-provoking film that explores some deep and complex themes in a very engaging and accessible way. The performances are excellent, the cinematography is beautiful, and the script is clever and insightful. I would highly recommend this film to anyone who is interested in art, relationships, or the nature of reality itself.
