King Kong is a 1933 American monster adventure film directed and produced by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Schoedsack. The film stars Fay Wray, Bruce Cabot, and Robert Armstrong, and tells the story of a giant, prehistoric gorilla named Kong who is captured and taken to New York City to be put on display. However, Kong breaks free and goes on a rampage through the city, ultimately climbing to the top of the Empire State Building where he is shot down by airplanes.

The film was a critical and commercial success upon its release and has since become a classic of the monster movie genre. It was also notable for its groundbreaking use of stop-motion animation and special effects, as well as its iconic score by Max Steiner. King Kong has been remade multiple times over the years, including a 1976 version and a 2005 version directed by Peter Jackson.
