The film takes place in early 18th-century England, during the reign of Queen Anne (played by Olivia Colman), and follows the power struggles between two of her closest advisors and friends, Lady Sarah Churchill (played by Rachel Weisz) and Abigail Masham (played by Emma Stone).

The film was highly praised for its acting, direction, and screenplay, and was nominated for ten Academy Awards, winning one for Best Actress for Olivia Colman’s portrayal of Queen Anne. It also won several other awards, including the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Rachel Weisz, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
