“The Help” is a drama film released in 2011, directed and written by Tate Taylor. The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Kathryn Stockett, which was published in 2009.
The story is set in the early 1960s in Jackson, Mississippi, during the civil rights movement. The film follows the lives of three women: Aibileen Clark (played by Viola Davis), Minny Jackson (played by Octavia Spencer), and Eugenia “Skeeter” Phelan (played by Emma Stone).
Aibileen and Minny are African American maids who work for white families in Jackson. Skeeter is a young white woman who has just returned home from college with dreams of becoming a writer. She becomes interested in telling the stories of the black maids and their experiences working for white families.
As Skeeter begins to interview the maids, she becomes more aware of the injustice and discrimination they face every day. Aibileen, Minny, and Skeeter form a strong bond as they work together to create a book that exposes the mistreatment of black maids in Jackson.
The movie was critically acclaimed and received several awards and nominations, including four Academy Award nominations. Viola Davis won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance as Aibileen Clark.
