“The Hunger Games” is a 2012 American science fiction adventure film directed by Gary Ross and based on the novel of the same name by Suzanne Collins. The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, and Donald Sutherland.
The story is set in a dystopian future where the nation of Panem consists of 12 impoverished districts and a wealthy Capitol. Each year, as a reminder of the Capitol’s power, one boy and one girl from each district are selected by lottery to participate in the Hunger Games, a televised event where they must fight to the death until only one victor remains.
The film follows the story of Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), a 16-year-old girl from District 12 who volunteers to take her younger sister’s place in the Hunger Games. Along with Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), the boy chosen from District 12, Katniss travels to the Capitol and prepares to compete in the deadly game.
The film was a critical and commercial success, grossing over $694 million worldwide. It was followed by three sequels, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” (2013), “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1” (2014), and “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” (2015).
