“The Reader” is a 2008 German-American romantic drama film directed by Stephen Daldry and starring Kate Winslet, David Kross, and Ralph Fiennes. The film is based on the 1995 novel of the same name by German author Bernhard Schlink.

The story is set in post-World War II Germany and follows a teenage boy named Michael Berg (played by David Kross) who has an affair with an older woman named Hanna Schmitz (played by Kate Winslet). The two develop a deep emotional connection, but their relationship is cut short when Hanna disappears without a word.

Years later, Michael is studying law and attends a war crimes trial where he comes face-to-face with Hanna, who is one of the defendants. As he learns more about her past, Michael must come to terms with the harsh reality of the war and his own role in it.

The film was praised for its performances, particularly Kate Winslet’s portrayal of Hanna, and was nominated for five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. Winslet won the Best Actress award for her role in the film.
